Portugal marks 116 years of the Republic with local commemorations

Various Portuguese municipalities are organizing events to commemorate the 116th anniversary of the Implantation of the Portuguese Republic on October 5.

In Fafe, the program includes a solemn session at the Town Hall, the raising of the national flag, and the presentation of the Dr. Maximino de Matos and Local History awards. The event will feature guest speaker António Vitorino, a lawyer and former European Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs. Additional activities include a horse race and ceremonies to honor former local officials.

In Seia, the Afonso Costa Republic Interpretation Centre (CIRAC) will host the ‘October Meetings,’ focusing on the 50th anniversary of Democratic Local Power. The event aims to reflect on the role of municipalities in democracy and territorial transformation since the first democratic local elections in 1976. The discussion will involve legal experts and former local officials, addressing current municipal challenges and civic participation.
