Portugal mortality falls 0.1% in first half of 2026

The Portuguese National Statistics Institute (INE) reported that total deaths in Portugal during the first six months of 2026 were 62,103, a 0.1% decrease compared with the same period in 2025. Among those, 115 were infants under one year.

In May 2026, 8,755 deaths were recorded, 708 fewer than in April and 369 fewer than in May 2025. The month also saw 7,221 newborns, 226 more than in April but 153 fewer than in May 2025. Over the first five months, 35,385 children were born, an increase of 453 compared with the same period a year earlier.

These figures indicate a modest decline in mortality alongside a slight rise in births, highlighting shifting demographic trends in Portugal.
