Portugal motorcycle accidents cause 52 deaths in six months

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) reported that 3,673 motorcycle accidents occurred during the first half of the year, resulting in 52 deaths, 342 serious injuries, and 2,650 minor injuries.

Data indicates that 78.8% of accidents involving victims took place within urban areas or localities, rather than on highways. Factors contributing to this include intense traffic, frequent intersections, and complex maneuvers. The highest number of fatalities was recorded in the districts of Santarém (8), Faro (7), Aveiro (6), Setúbal (6), and Porto (5).

Younger populations under the age of 29 represent the demographic most affected by these accidents. Additionally, motorcycles with medium to large engine capacities (above 125cc) accounted for approximately 42% of the total accidents and victim occurrences.
