Portugal mourns deaths of former local leaders Valter Januário and Humberto Oliveira

Portugal is mourning the passing of two former local government officials. Valter Januário, the former president of the Algueirão-Mem Martins Parish Council, has died. Januário, who was elected by the Socialist Party, served in his role from 2013 to 2025. The CDS-PP of Sintra issued a statement recognizing his 12 years of public service and his dedication to the community, noting that his death represents a loss for local democratic power.

Humberto Oliveira, the former mayor of Penacova, passed away at the age of 53 following an illness. Oliveira served as mayor from 2009 to 2021 and later held the position of president of the Penacova Municipal Assembly from 2021 to 2025. In addition to his political career, he was a higher education teacher and vice-president of the Instituto Superior Miguel Torga in Coimbra. The Coimbra District Federation of the Socialist Party expressed deep condolences, describing him as a highly qualified individual and a close friend.
