Portugal municipal libraries provide free book access

municipal libraries Portugal Manuel Carvalho Coutinho book access public libraries

In Portugal, 303 municipal libraries offer free access to books, serving as a vital resource for citizens unable to purchase them.

In the book ‘Biblioteca, uma segunda casa’, Manuel Carvalho Coutinho portrays 21 of these spaces across the mainland and islands. Through observations of daily life and testimonies from librarians, technicians, and readers, the work highlights how these libraries function as more than just reading locations, often acting as a ‘second home’ for many users.
