Portugal leaders advocate for interior investment and Atlantic strategy

Portuguese leaders and officials are emphasizing the need for strategic investment and geopolitical focus on the country's Atlantic territories and interior regions.

In Penamacor, President António José Seguro advocated for increased public investment in the country's interior to ensure national balance. Speaking at the inauguration of a new nursery funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan, Seguro noted that such investments are vital for retaining populations in aging regions where basic conditions like employment, housing, and digital infrastructure are essential.

Simultaneously, in Madeira, political figures including Regional Government President Miguel Albuquerque and former minister Paulo Portas highlighted the strategic importance of the Atlantic archipelagos. During ceremonies marking the 52nd anniversary of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGFA), leaders argued that Portugal's foreign policy must prioritize its Atlantic position. They emphasized the role of Madeira and the Azores in safeguarding sovereignty, monitoring submarine cables, and maintaining critical links between Europe, Africa, and the Americas amidst a changing global order.
