Jorge Jesus Takes Charge of Portugal, Says Ronaldo Still Eligible

Jorge Jesus was appointed as the new head coach of Portugal's national football team, replacing Roberto Martinez after the country's exit in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. Jesus signed a four‑year contract and will lead the side through the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League, Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.

Jesus emphasized a merit‑based approach, stating that selection will depend on current performance and fitness, not age. He said, "As long as he [Ronaldo] plays and is in condition to be selected, I will choose him, within the limits I consider best for the national team." The coach highlighted five key challenges: prioritising merit over reputation, balancing technical quality with work ethic, establishing a clear tactical identity, defining leadership roles, and integrating young talent such as Rodrigo Mora and Mateus Fernandes.
