Portugal opens competition for 2027 Venice Architecture Biennale

The Direção-Geral das Artes (DGArtes) has opened a limited competition to select the curatorial and exhibition project that will officially represent Portugal at the 20th International Architecture Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia in 2027. A total budget of 500,000 euros is available for the selected project.

A working group has shortlisted three proposals to compete for the representation:

1. ‘Analog Twins’ by Alice Clanet-Hallard, Edgar Brito, Francisco Lobo, and Romea Muryn. 2. ‘Mãos ao Chão’ by Joanna Alice Helm, Remígio Van Eyes Chilaule, and Samuel de Brito Gonçalves. 3. ‘Matéria Viva’ by Helena Botelho.

The selected proposals were chosen based on their conceptual quality and the artistic relevance of the teams involved, aligning with the theme ‘Do Architecture — For the Possibility of Coexistence Facing a Real Reality’ set by curators Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu. The Venice Biennale is scheduled to take place between May 8 and November 21, 2027.
