Portugal Parliament Approves Burka Ban and Tightens Immigration Rules
Portugal's parliament passed legislation prohibiting the wearing of burkas and other face‑covering veils in public spaces. The law imposes fines of €200‑€2,000 for negligent violations and €400‑€4,000 for intentional breaches; earlier drafts had called for up to three years in prison, but penalties were softened.
The measure was backed by the right‑wing Chega party and its coalition partners, while President José Seguro retains the power to veto the bill. If he does, parliament can overturn the veto with an absolute majority. In the same session, lawmakers approved stricter immigration provisions, extending naturalisation waiting periods and tightening residency rules.
The new regulations reflect a shift toward more restrictive policies on cultural integration and public safety, drawing criticism from civil‑rights groups while receiving support from nationalist politicians.
