Portugal Parliament backs EN 246 variant in Santa Eulália

The Assembly of the Republic adopted Resolution No. 237/2026, recommending that the Portuguese government adopt the measures needed to implement a variant of National Road EN 246 at Santa Eulália in the municipality of Elvas. The resolution calls for the definition and validation of a definitive technical solution to remove the existing road bottleneck, the institutional and administrative regularisation of the project, and the preparation, approval and scheduling of the execution plan with transparent timelines.

It also urges the allocation of the necessary financial resources to ensure the work proceeds on schedule. The EN 246 corridor is described as a key regional link connecting Elvas, Arronches and Portalegre and providing access to the border with Spain. A long‑standing bottleneck at the railway crossing in Santa Eulália limits heavy‑vehicle traffic, creates safety concerns and forces less suitable alternate routes, affecting regional mobility and logistics.
