Portugal Parliament joins judicial probe into alleged office assault
The President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, announced that the Portuguese Parliament has officially joined as an assistant in the judicial investigation regarding the alleged assault on the office of Chega leader André Ventura.
The investigation is examining potential crimes including unauthorized entry into a restricted area, qualified theft, and property damage related to parliamentary facilities and assets. The decision to intervene follows developments in the investigation that the Parliament deems necessary to safeguard the institution's interests and assets.
Lawyer José António Barreiros will provide legal representation for the Parliament on a pro bono basis, ensuring no fee costs to the institution. The incident stems from July 28, when André Ventura shared images on social media showing his office vandalized, with cabinets open and documents scattered on the floor.
