Portugal Parliament suspends Luís Neves inquiry during budget debate
The Assembly of the Republic has confirmed the suspension of the parliamentary inquiry into the mandates of Luís Neves as the national director of the Judicial Police (Polícia Judiciária). The suspension will remain in effect while the 2027 State Budget is being discussed, lasting approximately one month until November 26.
The inquiry aims to evaluate Neves's tenure from 2018 to 2026 and investigate the potential responsibility of government members who appointed and supervised him. The investigation was initiated by the Chega party following controversies involving construction work on a property owned by the current minister, conducted by a company that held contracts with the Judicial Police.
While formal proceedings are paused, the commission is permitted to meet to deliberate on the approval of regulations and the documentation required for the investigation. The decision to suspend was supported by most deputies, though Chega and Iniciativa Liberal voted against the measure.
