Portugal pension data shows high percentage below minimum wage

Data from the Social Security Institute indicates that approximately 74% of old-age pensioners in Portugal receive less than 870 euros per month, which is below the projected 2025 national minimum wage. This affects more than 1.6 million retirees.

The disparity is even more pronounced among disability pension beneficiaries, where roughly 90% of the 156,500 recipients receive less than 870 euros.

In contrast, pension values in the Madeira region are reported to be higher than the national average across the three main pension categories. In Madeira, the average old-age pension for men is nearly 500 euros higher than that for women.
