Portugal police rescue 20 dogs from abusive conditions in Loures

Around 20 dogs in a serious state of neglect were rescued by the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) in the parish of Lousa, Loures, after multiple public complaints. The animals were found in overcrowded sheds that functioned as makeshift kennels, lacking proper hygiene, food, water and shelter.

GNR officers identified a 64‑year‑old man as the owner and filed a criminal complaint for animal abuse and violation of prohibitions. Two dogs in critical condition were taken to a veterinary hospital, while the rest were transferred to the official collection centre of the Loures municipality for first‑aid treatment. The police emphasised that mistreatment of companion animals is a crime and pledged continued enforcement and investigation to protect animal welfare.
