Portugal drug seizure: 1.5 tons of cocaine worth €70M intercepted on A6

A 31-year-old foreign national has been placed in preventive detention following a major drug seizure on the A6 motorway near Estremoz, Portugal. The Polícia Judiciária intercepted a vehicle transporting approximately 1,532.40 kilograms of high-purity cocaine.

The seized narcotics are estimated to be worth more than 70 million euros. In addition to the drugs, authorities seized two semi-automatic firearms of war caliber, a vehicle, and various items including cash related to drug trafficking activities.

The suspect faces charges of aggravated international drug trafficking, criminal association, and possession of prohibited weapons. The Public Ministry stated that the arrest is part of an investigation into a criminal group that uses maritime routes to transport large quantities of cocaine into Europe through Portugal. The Évora Judicial Court ordered preventive detention to mitigate the risks of flight, interference with the ongoing investigation, and the continuation of criminal activities.
