Portugal political landscape faces rising dissatisfaction and leadership shifts

Political tension is rising in Portugal as recent polling indicates significant dissatisfaction with the current government. According to the Barómetro DN/Aximage, nearly two-thirds of Portuguese citizens believe the country would be better off with a new government, challenging Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s previous dismissal of such sentiments as ‘minor noise.’

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) is facing internal pressure and a rapid decline in public trust. Internal criticism has surfaced regarding Minister Luís Neves and the ConstruBarcelos contracts, with many respondents finding his explanations insufficient. This internal friction is compounded by a perceived lack of unified support from party leadership during recent controversies.

Simultaneously, shifts are occurring within the Socialist Party (PS). Mário Centeno is increasingly establishing an independent political agenda, positioning himself as a potential alternative to the current leadership. His continuous public presence and critical distance from the party's Secretary-General suggest growing ambitions for higher office.
