Portugal pre‑drive checklist aims to cut road accidents

A new pre‑departure checklist for drivers in Portugal emphasizes routine safety checks to reduce road accidents. The guide advises verifying lights, tire pressure, oil, coolant and windshield‑washer fluid, as well as ensuring mandatory safety items such as reflective vests and warning triangles are readily accessible. It also warns against unsecured items inside the vehicle that can become projectiles in sudden braking. According to the World Health Organization, about 90 % of road accidents stem from human error, which many of these checks can help mitigate. The checklist is promoted by the Minuto na Estrada programme and supported by Brisa Autoestradas to encourage safer driving habits across the country.
