Portugal property tax deadline for second IMI installment

Property owners in Portugal with an annual Municipal Property Tax (IMI) exceeding 500 euros face a deadline of August 31 to pay their second installment.

Under the IMI Code, payment schedules are determined by the total annual tax amount. If the IMI is under 100 euros, it is paid in a single installment in May. For amounts between 100 and 500 euros, payments are split into two installments (May and November). For amounts exceeding 500 euros, the tax is divided into three installments due in May, August, and November.

Tax rates for urban buildings typically range between 0.3% and 0.45%, while rural properties are taxed at a flat 0.8%. Local municipalities decide the specific rates within these ranges. Notably, properties that have been vacant for more than a year or are in ruins within urban pressure zones may face a rate ten times higher than the standard rate.
