Portugal ranks 9th in global passport mobility index

Portugal has ranked 9th in the 2026 global passport rankings according to a report by Passport Reports. The study analyzed passports from 199 countries across 34 languages.

The Portuguese passport holds a mobility index of 173, providing access to 87.4% of the globe. This includes 119 destinations with visa-free access, 43 through visa-on-arrival or simplified regimes, and 11 via electronic travel authorization. Visas are still required for 25 destinations.

Within Europe, Portugal ranks 12th among 47 countries, achieving 100% regional coverage. This coverage is also total in South America, the Caribbean, the Gulf countries, and North America. Regional access rates vary elsewhere, with Oceania at 92.9%, the Middle East at 82.4%, Asia at 82.0%, Central Asia at 80.0%, and Africa at 72.2%.
