Portugal ranks fifth globally in gold reserves per capita
Portugal is placed fifth worldwide for gold reserves per inhabitant, with 36.81 grams of gold per person, valued at roughly €4,030 (about $4,735). The ranking, compiled by investment‑research platform BestBrokers using data from the World Gold Council and LBMA price benchmarks, puts Portugal ahead of France, Qatar, Singapore and the Netherlands.
The per‑capita figure is eight times the global average of $568 per person. Only Switzerland, Lebanon, Italy and Germany have higher gold‑per‑person amounts, with Switzerland leading at 115.45 grams per citizen. The data highlights how Portugal’s relatively small population amplifies its per‑capita standing despite modest absolute gold holdings.
Central banks worldwide hold about $4.7 trillion in gold, and recent official purchases have risen in the second quarter of 2026 despite a dip in the average gold price, which fell 8 % to $4,506 per ounce.
