Portugal reaches record high in exclusive breastfeeding rates

Exclusive breastfeeding rates in Portugal reached a record high in 2025, with 46.9% of one-year-old children having been exclusively breastfed until six months of age. This figure represents a significant increase from previous years, when rates typically hovered around 30%, according to the Annual Report of the National Program for the Promotion of Healthy Eating (PNPAS) released by the Directorate-General of Health (DGS).

Maria João Gregório, director of the PNPAS, noted that while the result is positive, the data should be interpreted with caution. The increase may reflect a genuine improvement in breastfeeding practices or a more systematic recording of indicators within primary healthcare services following organizational changes and the expansion of family health units.

The report also highlighted the impact of the special consumption tax on sugary drinks. Between 2017 and 2025, the proportion of beverages in the highest tax bracket (containing 8g/100mL of sugar or more) decreased by 45.1%. This tax has incentivized the food industry to reformulate products, leading to a reduction in the production of high-sugar beverages.
