Portugal readies 900th anniversary of the Battle of São Mamede

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro will travel to Guimarães on 3 July to chair the National Commission created to coordinate the celebrations of the 900th anniversary of the Battle of São Mamede. The commission, based in the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, brings together representatives of the Assembly of the Republic, the Ministry of Defense, the Guimarães City Council, the University of Minho and the Portuguese Academy of History.

Guimarães mayor Ricardo Araújo has urged that 24 June 2028, the day of the historic battle, be declared a national holiday. The commemorations began on 24 June 2026 and will span two years, culminating in the 900‑year mark.

The battle on 24 June 1128 near Guimarães saw the young Afonso Henriques defeat his mother Teresa and her Galician ally Fernão Peres de Trava, securing control of the County of Portugal and setting the country on its path to independence.
