Portugal reorganizes Environmental Fund to boost gas subsidies and forest protection
Portugal’s Ministry of Environment has announced a reorganization of the Environmental Fund to address emerging needs identified in early 2026. A significant portion of the funds will be redirected to support vulnerable families through increased subsidies for bottled gas. The allocation for this support has been raised by 2.9 million euros, bringing the total to 3.7 million euros for domestic consumers benefiting from the social electricity tariff.
The reprogramming also prioritizes territorial resilience and sustainable resource management. This includes 4 million euros for the second phase of the Floresta Ativa program to assist forest producers with fuel matter cleaning to reduce wildfire risks. Additionally, 4.5 million euros are designated for agricultural and forestry projects that contribute to carbon sequestration and emission reductions. The government is also reinforcing support for investments aimed at improving water efficiency in public supply networks.
