Portugal report highlights decline in children's playtime

The fourth ‘Portugal a brincar’ report, coordinated by a research group led by Rui Mendes from the University of Coimbra, highlights a decline in free time and play for children. Based on a survey of 1,086 families, the study indicates that children have limited daily free time and insufficient play opportunities during weekends.

Key findings suggest that parents often mistake extracurricular activities for free time, and parental exhaustion limits meaningful play between parents and children. The report notes that schools frequently restrict play to recess rather than using it as a learning tool. Additionally, children are playing outdoors less frequently and have fewer toys available throughout the year. The researchers emphasize that play and unstructured free time are essential for developing mobility, motor skills, autonomy, and attention.
