Results from the 2026 Learning Monitoring Tests (ModA) in Portugal show slight improvements in Portuguese and Mathematics proficiency among 4th and 6th-grade students compared to 2025.
In Mathematics, average scores rose from 50.9 to 52.5 points in the 4th grade and from 51.3 to 52.3 points in the 6th grade. Portuguese language scores also saw progress, with 4th-grade averages increasing from 47.4 to 50.0 points and 6th-grade averages rising from 45.0 to 47.9 points.
Significant gains were noted in Portuguese as a Non-Native Language (PLNM). Specifically, written production and interaction scores rose from 43.3 to 55.4 points, while oral interaction and production improved from 46.6 to 52.0 points. The Institute of Education, Quality and Evaluation (EduQA) noted that these results allow schools to evaluate performance evolution for the first time since the tests' inception.
