Portugal repurposes former school buildings for social and security services
In Gondomar, the former Baguim do Monte primary school has been transformed into 'Espaço Saber+', a facility dedicated to promoting active aging and combating social isolation. Part of the 'Idade D’Ouro' network, the center provides recreational, cultural, and educational activities for residents aged 50 and older. The project was funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
In Batalha, the former Colégio de São Mamede is slated to become a strategic hub for the National Republican Guard (GNR) following a planned 1.9 million euro investment. The facility is intended to house an environmental training center, a national forest surveillance and fire detection structure, and a National Integrated Operational Management Center. Additionally, the site will serve as an operational support base for security during events at the Fátima Sanctuary.
