Portugal road safety: Multiple accidents and arrests reported in Madeira and Santarém
Authorities in different regions of Portugal reported significant road safety incidents and enforcement actions during late August.
In Madeira, the PSP reported 62 accidents between August 21 and 27, resulting in 19 minor injuries and no fatalities. Funchal recorded the highest number of occurrences with 20 accidents. Collisions were the most frequent type of accident. Law enforcement also detained 15 individuals for road crimes, including nine for driving under the influence of alcohol and five for driving without a valid license.
In the Santarém district, GNR enforcement operations between August 24 and 30 resulted in 114 accidents, causing four serious injuries and 37 minor injuries. During this period, 639 traffic infractions were recorded, including issues with vehicle inspections and speeding. The GNR detained 35 people, with 17 arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and nine for driving without a license. Other arrests included charges related to illegal weapons trafficking, disobedience, and resistance to authority.
