Portugal rolls out solidarity campaigns for medication access and firefighter support

The “Dê troco a quem precisa” campaign began on Monday in more than 500 pharmacies across mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira. Customers can donate the change from their purchases to fund essential medicines for families in proven socioeconomic need. Since its launch in 2016, the initiative has helped over 46,000 people and dispensed more than 3.6 million medication packages. Beneficiaries receive a card that lets them obtain prescribed subsidised medicines at no cost. Executive director Sara Nóbrega said the goal is to turn a simple gesture into real impact for thousands facing medication shortages.

In Campo Maior, the volunteer fire brigade started its “Garrafa Solidária 2026” drive, collecting 0.33 L and 0.50 L water bottles to supply firefighters during the rural fire season. President Luís Fava explained the aim is to improve hydration and logistics for crews, noting that 2026 is expected to be a particularly challenging year for Portugal’s fire services. Residents are asked to drop bottles at the fire station and may record the donation with a photo.
