Portugal rules out immediate security boost for Lajes Air Base
Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Melo stated that there are currently no plans for immediate security reinforcements at the Lajes Air Base. This follows the arrest of five men near the Fairford Air Base in the United Kingdom, a facility used by the United States. The suspects are accused of explosives law violations and preparing a terrorist act.
Melo, speaking in Brussels during an EU Defense Ministers meeting, noted that while the government is closely monitoring developments in Europe and beyond, the situation in the UK does not currently necessitate changes at Lajes. He emphasized that any required military or political reinforcement would be carefully evaluated by the relevant authorities if the situation evolves.
Regarding the EU Aspides operation in the Red Sea, the minister indicated that Portugal is considering potential participation as member states weigh responses to increased Houthi rebel attacks in the region.
