Portugal savings certificate investment hits record 43.8 billion euros

Investment in Portuguese savings certificates (Certificados de Aforro) reached a record high of 43,851 million euros in July, according to data from the Banco de Portugal. This represents a 14.7% increase compared to the same period last year and marks the 22nd consecutive month of growth.

This surge in savings certificates comes as investment in treasury certificates (Certificados do Tesouro) declined. Treasury certificate holdings fell to 6,532 million euros in July, a 24.5% year-on-year decrease, reaching their lowest level since January 2015.

Economic factors, including rising Euribor rates, have driven interest toward savings certificates. In July, the interest rate for these certificates rose to 2.356%. Additionally, the government has increased subscription limits for certain series to encourage investment.
