Portugal achieves record medal haul at 2026 Mediterranean Games
Portugal achieved a historic performance at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, securing a total of 32 medals, including 16 golds. This result surpasses the nation's previous bests at the 2018 and 2022 editions.
Athletics was a primary driver of this success. Notable achievements include Auriol Dongmo setting a new Games record in the women’s shot put with a 19.42m throw, and Omar Elkhatib setting a record in the men’s 400m with a time of 44.90 seconds. Other gold medalists included Patrícia Silva in the 1500m, José Carlos Pinto in the 5,000m, and Irina Rodrigues in the discus throw.
The Games also saw significant participation and record-breaking numbers for the host region, with over 170,500 tickets issued and a total of 1,853 medals awarded across 26 participating countries.
