Portugal secures SAFE defense loan agreement with European Commission
Portugal's National Defense Minister, Nuno Melo, announced that the European Commission has signed the loan agreement for the SAFE program. The document is currently awaiting validation from the Court of Auditors.
Melo expects the first tranche of the loan to be available by the end of the year, though the specific amount has not been disclosed. The SAFE program provides favorable European loans intended for use through 2030. Portugal's application for this financing, totaling 5.84 billion euros, represents one of the country's largest defense investments to date.
The funds are earmarked for several strategic military acquisitions and developments, including the purchase of frigates, the recovery of the Alfeite Arsenal, and the domestic production of armored vehicles, ammunition, satellites, and drones.
