Portugal sees 11.4% drop in unemployed couples to 4,181 in June

The Portuguese Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP) reported that the number of couples in which both partners were unemployed fell 11.4% year‑on‑year to 4,181 in June 2026, and 2.9% compared with May, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline since February. The report notes that 8,362 unemployed individuals (8.1% of the total unemployed married or cohabiting) have a spouse also registered as unemployed.

Unemployment on the mainland stood at 255,735 at the end of June, down 12% from the previous year and 6.6% from the month before. Couples in double‑unemployment who have dependents receive a 10% increase in their unemployment benefit.
