Portugal reports nearly 40% of children overweight, high fast‑food consumption

The Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE) released data for the fourth quarter of 2025 showing that almost four in ten Portuguese children aged five to 14 are overweight or obese. The report also found that 44.7% of children aged six to 14 regularly eat fast‑food, ultra‑processed foods or sugary drinks.

Daily consumption figures indicate that 81,000 children drink sugary beverages each day and 49,000 eat fast‑food or ultra‑processed meals daily. Despite these trends, 68.6% of children in the same age group eat fruit every day, with the habit most common among six‑year‑olds (73.3%). Obesity is more prevalent among boys (15.0%) than girls (10.7%), and peaks at 18.3% in the five‑to‑nine age bracket. Regional analysis notes that the Alentejo region stands out for child health indicators, yet obesity remains a pressing issue there as well.
