Portugal sees surge in inappropriate hospital admissions, costs exceed €350 million

The Portuguese Association of Hospital Administrators (APAH) reported that the number of hospital beds occupied by patients who have been clinically discharged has risen sharply since March. The latest barometer shows more than 2,800 inappropriate admissions—well above the figure expected for the summer period—and a 19% increase to 2,807 patients, a situation that normally declines in the warmer months.

APAH president Xavier Barreto told a parliamentary health committee that the direct‑cost estimate of over €350 million is likely an underestimate because it excludes indirect expenses. He called for immediate action, urging the government to strengthen domiciliary care teams, shift more long‑term care to the home, and invest additional resources to curb the trend.
