Portugal signs €3.9bn deal with Italy for three FREMM EVO frigates

Portugal’s government, led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, has approved a contract with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to build three FREMM EVO multipurpose frigates. The deal is worth about 3.9 billion euros and includes construction, technology transfer, logistical support, and sustainment for at least 30 years.

Delivery of the vessels is scheduled for 2029–2030. The new ships will enhance the Portuguese Navy’s capabilities in maritime surveillance, anti‑submarine warfare and Atlantic security, and are intended for both national defence and participation in international missions. The agreement also involves cooperation with Italian defence ministers and aims to involve Portuguese industry in combat systems and related areas.
