Portugal simplifies driver's license renewal via digital app

Driver's license renewal in Portugal has become more streamlined through the gov.pt app, allowing for a fully digital process that can be completed at any time without the need for in-person visits.

The Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT) advises drivers to check their license validity regularly and renew it within the six months preceding its expiration to avoid driving infractions.

Failure to renew a license within specific timeframes leads to increasing penalties. If a license has been expired for more than two years but less than five, renewal may require passing a special exam, including a practical driving test. For licenses expired between five and ten years, drivers may be required to complete a specific training course followed by a practical exam to regain legal driving status.
