Portugal Socialist leader José Luís Carneiro urges regionalisation vote, condemns government

Socialist Party secretary‑general José Luís Carneiro told a party congress in Porto that the PS must be ready to ask Portuguese citizens whether they support regionalisation, and to push reforms that give regional powers direct democratic legitimacy. He criticised the coalition government of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro for what he called “insensitivity” on the economy, housing, school exam delays, labour reforms and health emergencies. Carneiro said the government should explain its failures and promised a “serious and solid” alternative focused on a technology‑driven economic model, development of the interior, and opportunities for the 100 000 youth in professional training and the 140 000 who are neither studying nor working. He called on Matosinhos mayor Luísa Salgueiro to lead a team on housing solutions and pledged new measures for the national health service.
