Portugal, Spain, and Luxembourg urge EU to set 2040 renewable energy targets
Portugal, Spain, and Luxembourg have formally requested that the European Commission establish a specific, future-oriented framework for renewable energy through 2040. In a letter addressed to Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, the energy ministers of the three nations called for an “ambitious and realistic” EU target to provide clear signals to markets and investors.
The proposal emphasizes the need to accelerate the expansion and integration of renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The ministers argued that high fossil fuel dependency leaves economies and citizens vulnerable to geopolitical uncertainties, citing the consequences of the Strait of Hormuz blockade as a reason for rapid action.
Additionally, Portuguese Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho has called for a more coordinated and active EU response to the current fuel crisis. She emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the EU internal market and preventing unequal competition caused by varying national capacities to provide state aid to affected sectors.
