Portugal spends around €600,000 daily on obesity injection drugs

In 2025, Portuguese pharmacies sold more than half a million packages of the obesity drugs Wegovy and Mounjaro, generating roughly €130 million in revenue. Data from Infarmed show that between January and 31 March 2025, the average daily outlay on these weekly‑administered injections was about €613 000, with around 2,355 packages sold each day. The treatments are not reimbursed by the National Health Service (SNS), yet demand continues to rise, with over 2,300 packages sold daily even by people without a formal obesity or diabetes diagnosis. Prices vary by dosage: a 2.5 mg pen costs €182.92, while a 7.5 mg pen is €337.63.

The surge has been driven largely by the market entry of Mounjaro and Wegovy, according to the National Association of Pharmacies (ANF), marking a significant increase in private health spending on weight‑loss medications in Portugal.
