Portugal student housing crisis faces rising rents and speculation

Students in Portugal are facing a housing crisis characterized by exorbitant rental prices and real estate speculation. In the Porto metropolitan area, reports indicate that single rooms are being rented for as much as 500 to 550 euros, often in shared living conditions with many other residents. Francisco Porto Fernandes, president of the Federação Académica do Porto (FAP), noted that these rising costs are forcing many students to abandon their desired courses in favor of options closer to home, describing the situation as a societal failure.

In response to these challenges, the political party Livre has pledged to introduce proposals to protect student 'republics' and advocate for increased public housing investment. Speaking in Coimbra, co-spokesperson Jorge Pinto emphasized the need to update laws governing these student residences to safeguard them from speculation. The party is also seeking clarity from the University of Coimbra regarding its plans for certain historic student buildings to ensure they remain accessible and culturally preserved.
