Portugal targets 2026 launch for Azores spaceport

Portugal is accelerating plans to establish a spaceport on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores. Following the successful launch by German company Isar Aerospace, which placed five small satellites into orbit from Norway, the Portuguese Space Agency is emphasizing the need for domestic launch capabilities.

Ricardo Conde, president of the Portuguese Space Agency, stated that the goal is to achieve a first launch from the Azores by 2026, even if it is initially a suborbital flight. The development comes as a new generation of European small-satellite launchers reaches maturity, including companies such as Germany’s Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) and France’s MaiaSpace.

The rise of small satellite constellations is driving demand for more flexible launch options, potentially reducing European dependence on American infrastructure like SpaceX’s Falcon 9. This shift is sparking a competitive race to develop functional spaceports across Europe to support these emerging launch providers.
