Portugal telecom sector sees Lyca Mobile's annual plans and Vodafone's Azores 5G rollout
Lyca Mobile, a virtual mobile operator in Portugal, has launched a pricing model that lets customers pay for a quarter, half‑year or full year of service in advance, offering significant discounts compared with monthly tariffs. Packages range from 100 GB to 200 GB of data, with annual prices as low as €60 for 100 GB. The plan runs on Vodafone’s network, including access to 5G, and is aimed at drawing users away from incumbents such as DIGI, MEO, NOS and Vodafone itself.
Meanwhile, Vodafone Portugal is expanding its infrastructure in the Azores. The company reports that 5G coverage now reaches about 95 % of the island population, delivering gigabit‑speed broadband. Investments include new mobile stations, upgraded 4G, enhanced back‑haul via the Atlantic CAM, Nuvem and Sol submarine cables, and a focus on IoT, AI, cloud and cybersecurity services to boost sectors like agriculture, tourism and energy.
