Portugal to deliver over 28,000 public houses by end of August
The Portuguese Government announced that more than 28,000 new public houses will be delivered by the end of August, surpassing the 26,000-unit target established under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) through the '1.º Direito' program.
In a joint statement, the Ministries of Economy and Territorial Cohesion and Infrastructure and Housing noted that an additional 12,000 homes are currently under advanced construction. This is expected to bring the total to 40,000 completed houses by December 2026.
To achieve these goals, the government reinforced the '1.º Direito' program with 2.8 billion euros from the State Budget, supplementing the 1.4 billion euros provided by PRR funds. The government attributed the progress to the 'Construir Portugal' program, which aimed to accelerate processes through collaboration between the state, the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), and local municipalities. Looking ahead to 2030, the government plans to mobilize approximately 9 billion euros for public housing.
