Portugal to implement full biometric data collection at airports in September
Portugal is preparing for the full implementation of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which will mandate 100% biometric data collection for non-EU citizens starting September 6. During a visit to Lisbon Airport, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro noted that the transition to digital registration—replacing passport stamps with photos and fingerprints—is expected to increase workload and pressure on border control services.
Portugal and seven other nations have requested the European Commission to extend the current temporary suspension of the system's full application. To manage the transition, the government plans to monitor the situation closely and invest in technological and IT infrastructure.
Separately, Thailand is expanding its automated immigration gates at Suvarnabhumi Airport. By the end of August, citizens from 33 countries, including Portugal, will be able to use these gates to expedite arrival, though first-time visitors must still undergo traditional biometric registration at manual counters.
