Portugal to introduce road safety training for scooters and bicycles

Portuguese driving schools will begin providing road safety training to students in the 2nd and 3rd cycles of education. The initiative, aimed at teaching the safe use of bicycles and scooters, was established through an agreement between the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) and the National Association of Driving Schools (ANIECA).

The commitment, which remains in effect until the end of 2027, includes a pilot project titled ‘Micromobilidade em Segurança’. The training structure varies by age: students in the 5th and 6th years will receive theoretical instruction, while those in the 7th, 8th, and 9th years will participate in both theory and practical exercises at driving school facilities.

Participants will receive a certificate of participation upon completion. All actions under this agreement will be free of charge for schools, students, and families. Additionally, a working group will be formed to review road education standards to include regulations for scooters and electric scooters.
