Portugal to invest over 100 million euros in new GNR facilities
The Portuguese government has reaffirmed a commitment to invest more than 100 million euros in new facilities for the National Republican Guard (GNR) in Portalegre. The project includes the construction of a new GNR Training Center and the Portalegre Territorial Command.
Secretary of State for Internal Administration, Telmo Correia, stated that the investment is approximately 103 million euros and described the project as an urgent intervention to address decades of delays in existing facilities. The new complex will span 11 hectares in the Portalegre industrial zone, featuring 22 buildings and a multifunctional plaza designed to accommodate approximately 1,210 personnel, including officers, sergeants, guards, and trainees.
While previous estimates suggested work could begin in 2026, Telmo Correia indicated during a parliamentary hearing that construction is more likely to commence in 2028. The project is currently undergoing environmental assessments and licensing processes involving the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF).
