Portugal to overhaul traffic code with higher fines and stricter penalties

Portugal's government is preparing a new traffic code that will raise fines and streamline electronic processing of penalties through a pilot project called “Auto Digital.” The plan includes installing 12 medium‑speed radars by the end of the year, expanding the use of speed cameras, and reinstating a dedicated GNR traffic brigade of about 1,300‑1,400 officers to patrol highways.

The changes aim to cut road‑traffic deaths by 50% by 2030. A working group began its meetings on 26 May and must deliver the final draft by the end of September, with the law expected to be approved before the end of the current calendar year.
