Portugal to purchase three FREMM EVO frigates from Fincantieri

Portugal has agreed to acquire three FREMM EVO (European Multi-Mission Frigate Evolution) frigates from the Italian naval group Fincantieri. The deal is valued at approximately 3.9 billion euros.

The new vessels are the latest version of the FREMM class, featuring updated sensors, combat systems, and capabilities designed to address emerging threats. The acquisition is being funded through the SAFE (Safe Action for Europe) instrument, of which Portugal has secured 5.8 billion euros.

The Portuguese Navy currently operates five frigates, some of which entered service as far back as 1991. The new units are intended to increase operational availability and support missions involving maritime surveillance, anti-aircraft and anti-submarine defense, and NATO or European Union operations. The frigates are expected to be delivered between 2029 and 2030. While Fincantieri was selected, other companies, including France's Naval Group, were previously considered during the evaluation process.
