Portugal tourism sees resident growth and foreign stay decline in June 2026
In June 2026 Portugal’s tourism sector recorded 36.8 million overnight stays and €3.148 billion in revenue, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Resident stays rose 3.8 % to 2.5 million, while non‑resident stays fell 0.6 % to 5.7 million – the first drop in eight months.
Regional performance varied: the North posted a 4.8 % increase, Greater Lisbon 2.3 %, and Alentejo 2.1 %. The West, Vale do Tejo and Madeira saw declines. In Alentejo, 366.2 thousand stays were recorded, with residents making up about 70 % of guests; tourism revenue grew 5.6 % year‑on‑year and the average daily rate (ADR) rose 6.8 %.
The sector’s growth is driven largely by the domestic market. Minister of Economy Manuel Castro Almeida has called for “valuing tourism” by raising the price tourists pay per day to improve wages and investment. Senior tourists represent a fast‑growing segment that is poorly served by existing digital platforms, prompting calls for more accessible information. Between January and March 2026, more than five million trips were recorded in Portugal, underscoring the country’s strong travel demand.
